Remember as a kid going to the lane and watching him on numerous occasions. They say now that goal scorers are worth millions I wonder what his value would have been in todays market.

Very sad to learn this news - thoughts go to his family, together with best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Was fearing the worst when I saw the thread title but this is still very upsetting news. Greaves is my all-time favorite English player and you have to be of a certain age to really appreciate what he brought to the game and how good he really was. Goalscorer supreme, he was lethal around goal and it's a crying shame when you've got kids today such as Rooney who will eventually overtake his England scoring record. For awareness in the area, finishing prowess and instinct there were few better.

Read his autobiography recently and not only a tremendous playing individual but could tell a great story with articulate and comprehensive detail. Sadly like Best and Gascoigne alcohol abuse took a hold and disrupted a full potential but still provided many years of outstanding play. Deserved to be part of a championship winning team but didn't join up with Tottenham until 1962, one year after the double achievement.

Wish Mr Greaves every success in his fight back to recovery and thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

PS Shed on Tour saw what you wrote and to be honest you couldn't put a price on Greaves in todays game. If players like Bale go for 80 million then what the hell would Jim be worth ? Something astronomical not less than 100 million, he was that good.

I still remember back to 1963 when I was a young autograph hunter and Jimmy Greaves let me into the Spurs dressing room at Portman Road where I got all the players autographs on a fabulous colour team photograph. Situations like that would never be allowed to happen these days but in the early 60's players were so much more accessible.

Jimmy Greaves became one of my idols after that good deed and my autograph collection that day also included a number of other Spurs legends including John White who was tragically killed the following year by lightning whilst sheltering under a tree during a thunderstorm whilst playing golf.

Most people will be unaware that Greaves own favorite sporting accomplishment was participating in the 1970 World Rally

For those in the dark, Greaves was not selected for the Mexico '70 World Cup by Ramsey and instead 'was persuaded' to have a go at a European / South American motor rally that took in locations such as Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Panama and Peru. On one or two occasions actually came close to death while involved but he made it through in a very respectable place out of all those who participated.

Was involved in the 'West Ham Blackpool scandal' a year after and retired from professional soccer at the end of the 1970 / 71 season although still featured in later years for other teams albeit in a sporadic non-professional capacity.

One last mention goes to the great Spurs team of the 1960s that Greaves was involved with, names such as MacKay, White, Gilzean, Dyson and Smith. This was a team that could get you 100 goals a season and Greaves was largely responsible for this. Also did well for Milan albeit in a short spell but fell out of favor with the manager, who Greaves described in his autobiography as 'an overweight ex-heavyweight boxer'

Yes that was a good program that many of todays generation missed out on. Greaves was often ridiculing the scots any opportunity that came his way and even at a Wales / Scotland World Cup qualifier in the 1980s asked one of the away fans if he could see what was under his kilt to confirm he was a true scot (!)

Him and Saint John were a class act, almost at home with each other as Abbott and Costello. The latter was very upset to hear the news as you'd imagine and all thoughts are once again with them at this difficult time.

Yes that is good to hear, keeping a close eye on his situation. Not to appear repetitive but wishing Mr Greaves every success once again towards a full recovery.

Didn't realize Greaves (now) resides in Suffolk but he actually has always had a soft spot for Ipswich and has given us a mention in various publications. There's an article in the East Anglian Daily Times about Mr Greaves improvement but the page has been problematic.

What I don't understand is that he's about to be inducted into the Spurs hall of fame in a week or two, which obviously must be put back to another date until Mr Greaves is in better condition, but why wait until now ? Should have been included many years before now, it's a bit of a disgrace in so many words. Guessing they've got names already in such as Villa, Gascoigne, Hoddle, Mabbutt and Perryman but no Greaves as of yet ?

Just adds insult to injury when you learn of it
