.
34,078 Ipswich Town Fc
Aston Villa are on the attack at Portman Road in this clash with Ipswich in 1939. Villa won 2-1 in Suffolk but were knocked out in the following round by Preston. This was the last season of FA Cup action before the outbreak of World War Two, with the competition eventually won by Portsmouth

Great stuff , Wolfie.
I haven’t ever seen that pic of Mariner holding the Uefa Cup over the balcony. Imagine it was Paul Cooper and he dropped it?

Another thing………, just shows how long Mills was a player. His name is in a lot of those very old programmes in the team sheet, yet there is a pic much later wearing the Fisons shirt.
Great player …….. and , for me, when i hear him, very knowledgable pundit

Re: Old Pictures of PORTMAN ROAD, & Ipswich.
When I was a kid, I took tennis lessons in Ipswich and Mick Mill's son was in my group. As some of you know, my dear old dad is/was American and he embraced ITFC and English football like no other. Mick showed up one afternoon to pick up his son, and my dad was like a little boy talking to him. Those are great memories!
RIP, Dad!

I would say this is Chelmsford City FA Cup tie, only because I was there too Woolfie and two seasons later played there. I can’t remember the score other than we won. I’ll guess 1-2 or 1-3.

Re: Old Pictures of PORTMAN ROAD, & Ipswich.
Kicking off with a different kind of football, as Portman Road hosted a game of American football back in May 1984.
Portman Road stadium commonly plays host to games of football, but in 1979, it was used as a movie set.
In January 1987, winter was in full swing as a layer of snow covered the ground completely.
Dedicated football fans camped outside the stadium to ensure they got tickets to the big games in April 1978.
The winning side lined up at Portman Road ready to pose for a photo with the shield.
Portman Road stadium also felt the effects of nature as it was subjected to flood in July 1976, which left most the road underwater.

that Jack Parry in those 1950s pics, he was captain of my local dart team, we started up a B team , we noticed before he played he would run his throwing hand across the top of the pelmet above the windows for dust to grip his darts.
We were playing them on a Friday in the league, so on the Thursday we spread woodworking glue on the top of the pelmet,
come the match and his turn he ran his hand along the pelmet and his face when he see his hand was a picture , anyway he never did forgive us for that, LOL.
Looking back, this feller played for Ipswich and Wales, and after was laying bricks for a living, how things have changed aye.
He had a mate called Monty, (nickname) who played for Ipswich. never did know who he was, Anyone have a clue,
Brynley John Parry (11 January 1924 – 20 January 2010)[2] was a Welsh professional footballer. During his career he made almost 100 appearances for Swansea Town and 138 appearances for Ipswich Town between 1951 and 1955. Born in Wales in 1924, Jack married Edith and had 3 children. In his later years he moved to London and then Chelmsford as a bricklayer. Most notably, Parry 'topped off' the Natwest building in London. Parry had 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren all living around the Chelmsford area of Essex before his death in 2010.
RIP Jack
