Alan Shearer is it. Player or manager, you don't specify.

Are we still with Rugby or are we back to football, or maybe a different sport completely ?

Back to football.
“On the pitch I hate all opponents. I don't give a damn about anyone. People think I'm mad, a lunatic. I am a winner”

No.... it fits with Keane, but no.
More of a cult footballer, than a cu*t footballer like Keane.

Re: Who said that?
No.
Erm ... this former player did not reach the heights of Keane or Cantona. Although there’s a book written about him and he’s had a song dedicated to him and appeared on an album cover with an iconic photo. There’s been talk of a film about him - not “When Saturday Comes” ... that’s probably a day late.

Re: Who said that?
You may have given it away with the song thing. Years back Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs released a title called Wooly Bully, point being there were a remake of sorts with believe Vincent Jones.
Not as big in stature as Keane or the other, must have been some literature put his way at one time or another. Maybe about 80 per cent on this.

Re: Who said that?
Sorry SJ, not Vinny Jones. There has been a cryptic clue so far, but not the one you mention.
This player is not as well known as Vinnie Jones, although he genuinely did go to prison (for impersonating a police officer). He was once sent off for kicking Mark Lawrenson in the face ( then allegedly broke into the changing rooms and defecated in Lawro’s kit bag).

Re: Who said that?
I have no idea who it is, but I like the sound of him! Mark Lawrenson is a c*ck.

Re: Who said that?
He never played top level football and his professional career was only 3 years old when he retired at the age of 25.
Even so he was voted player of the century for a blue and white hoop shirted club. He ended his short career at the Bluebirds, but it might have been more fitting to call him a red bird.

Re: Who said that?
Can’t say he was well-known. I only stumbled across his life-story ten years or so ago in the book” the greatest footballer you never saw”... amazing story, but tragic story in the end as he ended up dying of a heroin overdose at 38.
There’s a couple of cryptic clues already which gave away his full name.
